DEER LAKES CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
SCHOLARSHIP Ÿ SERVICE Ÿ LEADERSHIP Ÿ CHARACTER
The National Honor Society chapter of Deer Lakes High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of the National Honor Society. Membership is open to those junior and senior students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a 5-member Faculty Council, appointed annually by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified junior and senior students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year. The chapter advisor, Mrs. Angela Simon, is also appointed by the principal and facilitates all selection procedures, chapter activities, meetings and projects during the school year.
Students in 11th & 12th grades are eligible for membership if they meet the scholarship criteria, which is having a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.85 or higher. Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Information Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experience and participation in school or community service is required. Students will also need to have a Character Reference form completed and get a Letter of Recommendation, both from a non-relative adult. Packets with the required forms will be mailed home to eligible students in October. NOTE: Students must have completed 30 hours of volunteer/community service in BOTH their freshman & sophomore year, for a total of 60 hours, and must submit their Service Hours Verification Forms along with the other required forms mentioned.
The Faculty Council will carefully review each candidate’s Candidate Information Form, Character Reference Form, Letter of Recommendation and Student Service Hours Verification Forms to determine whether the candidate meets all of the criteria for membership. A majority vote of the Faculty Council is necessary for selection. Following a review of the results of the Faculty Council voting by the principal, candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection within 10 school days of the deadline for the candidates to turn in their forms. Once the notification process is completed, a formal induction ceremony is held on a weekday evening in December (date will be announced) in the high school auditorium to recognize all the newly selected members. Invitations and RSVP forms will be mailed home in November.
Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance, or better, in all criteria that led to their selection. This obligation also includes regular attendance at monthly chapter meetings held during the school year, participating in the chapter service projects as well as completing 10 hours of volunteer/community service by mid May (date will be announced) of their junior year AND completing 10 hours of volunteer/community service before Christmas break (date will be announced) of their senior year. (NOTE: if a member is just being inducted in their senior year, they are only required to complete 10 hours in their senior year)
Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter advisor, Mrs. Angela Simon, in the School Counseling Office. E-mail Mrs. Simon.
