5 Deer Lakes students earn Eagle Scout award

Five Deer Lakes students who earned the Eagle Scout award.
They are Austin Demek, Alex Godinez, Gabriel Hazlet, Pierce Hayostek, and Wesley Reagle. Included in our pictures is Fox Chapel Area’s Luka Muchnok, who earned the Eagle Scout award along with several Deer Lakes students.
Each student earned their Eagle Scout award through unique journeys.
Austin greatly improved an area of the North Side Sportsmen’s Association range that is dedicated to helping current and future generations safely learn and practice skills needed for successful hunting.
Alex constructed a Rosary Garden on the St. Victor’s Church campus. The garden has seven native perennial flowers surrounding a raised area of river rock, where parishioners can ‘walk’ a decade of the rosary by following the path of ten large stones around a statue of Mary. There are also two stone benches on the outside of the circle, with a small path leading up to the area.
Gabriel enhanced the East Deer Ball Field Dugout, which will support community engagement. The dugout’s newly advanced appearance, safety and function has made the space more inviting to gather to play America’s game.
Luka installed Fishing Line and Recycling Bins at Emmerling Community Park, which will promote safe public recreation and conservation alongside the Western Pennsylvania Audubon Society and Berkely Institute. The collected fishing line will be repurposed into fish habitats.
Pierce constructed the Pine Valley Box Cave to facilitate team building opportunities while fostering the enjoyment of outdoor recreation at a Youth Camp program that focuses on ministering to underprivileged youth from urban areas. The Box Cave is a large outdoor maze with five floors that campers navigate.
Wesley spearheaded several improvements to the American Legion Post 593 Flag Retirement Area by providing a collection and storage bin for flags awaiting scheduled retirement services, as well as creating a safe, accessible and permanent space to perform those services.
Thank you each for everything you do positively impact our community!
